Over the past few years, vinyl plank flooring has become one of the most popular types of flooring across the country. The reasons are easy to understand: it looks like real wood, it resists moisture, and it fits almost any budget.
Laying it is also more versatile. Depending on the product, it can be installed as a floating floor, glued down and also nailed. That flexibility makes it a favourite for renovators and homeowners across the country.
Road salt can leave a hazy residue that can dull the surface of hardwood, laminate and vinyl. Wipe up residue quickly with a slightly damp cloth together with a pH-neutral cleaner. Stay away from steam mops on wood and laminate.
When planning a flooring project, they tend to focus on the colour, style and price. Yet what you put under your planks matters just as much. The right underlayment can make a big difference in comfort, noise levels and moisture protection, while it helps your flooring perform better.
Comfort is also important, especially in Canadian winters. Luxury vinyl is softer and quieter underfoot than ceramic tile, while several collections come with an attached underlayment for better sound absorption.
The cold season in Canada are beautiful, but they are rough on your floors. Melting snow, calcium chloride, sand and dry indoor air can dull even the best floors over time. With the right routine, you can keep your flooring looking great all season long.
Vinyl plank is often the best choice below grade. Several LVP collections are fully waterproof, so they will not be damaged when moisture happens. Rigid-core planks also bridge minor imperfections in the concrete.
A good underlay also smooths out minor imperfections in the subfloor and gives some comfort and insulation. Remember, however, that is not a substitute for proper subfloor preparation: large dips and bumps must be corrected beforehand.
If you are choosing a wood-look floor, two products usually top the list: laminate and Istanbulclasse.net natural hardwood. Each of them can look beautiful, but they have important differences when it comes to cost, performance and lifespan.
The biggest advantage of vinyl plank is that many products are waterproof. In contrast to traditional laminate, a well-made LVP does not swell or cup after contact with moisture. This makes it a perfect fit for basements, laundry rooms and entryways.
When shopping, look closely at the veneer thickness. A thicker veneer means you can refinish the floor later, extending the floor’s lifespan. Also maintain humidity between roughly 35 and 55 percent for best results.
Homes in Canada experience significant seasonal swings throughout the year. During winter, our heaters dry out indoor air; in the warm months, humidity rise sharply. For wood flooring, this cycle can cause gapping, cupping and movement.
Everything starts at the entrance. Place a sturdy outdoor mat and an absorbent mat inside each door. Two mats catches the majority of the snow and grit before it can scratch the rest of the house. Use a waterproof tray so snowy boots aren’t left on your flooring.
Indoor humidity also matters and is very important. During the heating season, the air inside often becomes extremely dry, causing wood floors to shrink and small gaps to appear. Using a humidifier that keeps indoor humidity in a moderate range helps protect your wood floors as well as your health.
That is where engineered hardwood really shines. Rather than being made from a single solid piece of wood, engineered flooring is built from several layers: a top layer of real wood on top of a plywood or HDF core. That construction limits seasonal movement.
What you get is flooring that looks just like traditional wood while behaves better in our climate. Because it is more stable, engineered hardwood can often be installed in rooms in which solid wood is not recommended, including below-grade rooms or over concrete slabs.
Turning a basement into living space is an excellent way to gain extra square footage and comfort in your house. Yet below-grade spaces present unique challenges: concrete slabs, dampness and lower temperatures. Choosing the wrong flooring may result in mold, buckling and expensive replacements.
Porcelain tile remains virtually waterproof, although it feels chilly if you do not install radiant floor heating. Carpet, on the other hand, is cozy but may hold moisture, which is why carpet tiles are often a safer bet.
Durability is another reason to choose it. Many vinyl planks include a tough top coating that resists scuffs and scratches, stains and spills and discoloration. Busy households appreciate how little care it needs: a quick sweep and a light mop keep it looking new.
One of its main jobs is acoustic insulation. Floating floors can sound hollow if installed directly on the subfloor. The right underlay dampens footstep noise, which is especially important in condos where strata rules frequently set a minimum IIC or STC rating.
