The rules are there to keep you safe.
Not to make you nervous.
If you’re afraid you’re forgetting something, let me tell you this: there will always be a briefing before the competition begins. Someone will walk you through exactly what to expect, what to do, and what not to do. You’ll have space to ask questions, clarify doubts, and exhale.
You’re not meant to know it all beforehand. You’re meant to show up, and learn as you go.
AIDA Pool Competition: What Actually Happens
AIDA pool competitions are structured, but they’re not scary. At their heart, they’re an invitation. To test yourself. To meet yourself.
You’ll choose your discipline: Static Apnea (STA), Dynamic with Fins (DYN), Dynamic without Fins (DNF), or Dynamic with Bi-Fins (DYNB). You’ll submit your announced performance in advance. You’ll warm up. You’ll hear the countdown. You’ll dive.
What matters most is:
- Show up on time
- Listen to the briefing
- Follow the countdown
- Perform your surface protocol correctly
That’s it. That’s the frame. Everything else is support.
Surface Protocol in Simple Terms
When you finish your dive, you need to:
- Remove your nose clip or facial equipment
- Give the okay sign
- Say “I’m okay”
And you must do it within 15 seconds after surfacing. Simple. Direct. Practice it in training so it becomes muscle memory.
Here’s a great summary by AIDA International if you want to read more.
Don’t Forget the Fun
The most important rule? Have fun.
This isn’t a punishment. It’s not an exam. It’s a playground for your nervous system. If you can smile, you’re doing it right.
I’ve written before about competing without chasing numbers and finding progress in slow training. This is an extension of that.
You’re not here to prove something. You’re here to experience something.
So bring your best self. Your calmest breath. And maybe a cute towel for the post-dive pictures.
Because the second-most important rule?
Look good in the celebratory photos!
