Canadian homes go through big humidity changes every year. During winter, our heaters dry out the air; in summer, humidity go up quickly. For wood flooring, this cycle often leads to cracks, cupping and movement.
Everything starts at the entrance. Use a rough outdoor mat and a washable absorbent rug indoors every entrance. Using both catches the majority of the snow and grit before it can scratch the rest of the house. Add a waterproof tray to make sure snowy boots never sit directly on the floor.
Kitchens and washrooms count as the hardest-working rooms in the house. They get splashes, humidity, heavy foot traffic and frequent mopping. Your flooring choice here has to be water-resistant, durable and low maintenance without sacrificing great design.
Vinyl plank is often the best choice below grade. Many LVP collections are completely water-resistant, meaning they won’t be damaged if humidity appears. Rigid-core vinyl also hide slight unevenness in the concrete.
When planning a flooring project, they usually focus on colour, the style and Humpaki.cOm price. But what lies beneath the floor is just as important. A good underlayment can improve how the floor feels, sound and protection against moisture, while it helps your new floor stay beautiful for years.
One important note: many vinyl and laminate products include a pre-attached pad. If so, adding a second layer could create joint failure and cancel your warranty. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Underlayment also smooths out minor imperfections in the base and gives a little softness underfoot. Remember, however, it cannot replace proper subfloor preparation: major unevenness must be levelled first.
The result is a floor that feels identical to traditional wood while performs better in Canadian conditions. Because it moves less, engineered hardwood can be used in places in which solid hardwood is not recommended, like basements and on concrete.
Turning a basement into living space is one of the best ways to add living space and value to your home. But basements bring specific problems: cold concrete, humidity and lower temperatures. Choosing the wrong flooring may result in mildew, warping and costly repairs.
One of its main jobs is acoustic insulation. Laminate and click vinyl may sound loud without a good underlay. The right underlay dampens that hollow sound, something that is especially useful in condos in which condo boards often require specific acoustic ratings.
Porcelain tile remains very water-resistant, although it tends to feel cold underfoot if you do not install in-floor heating. Carpet, on the other hand, adds comfort yet may hold moisture, so rugs over a hard floor are usually a more practical choice.
Road salt often leaves a hazy residue which may dull the finish of most floors. Remove salt marks quickly using a soft mop and a cleaner made for your type of floor. Never use excess water on wood and laminate.
Engineered hardwood is a possibility when you prefer real wood. Because of its layered construction, engineered wood resists moisture swings much better than solid wood, and solid wood is a poor choice below grade. Use an appropriate underlay for the best results.
That is exactly where engineered wood makes a difference. Instead of being made from a solid plank, an engineered plank is built from several layers: a genuine wood veneer bonded to a plywood or HDF core. That construction reduces seasonal movement.
Before you buy, look closely at the thickness of the wear layer. A thicker top layer means you can sand it down the road, extending the life of your floor. Don’t forget to maintain humidity at a steady level for best results.
Can you use laminate in wet areas? Water-resistant laminate can be a good fit for kitchens, provided that moisture is dealt with right away. Wood may also be used in a kitchen if you are careful, but in bathrooms with a shower or tub, tile and vinyl are the recommended options.
When you are deciding on a classic wood look, two materials almost always lead the conversation: laminate and natural hardwood. Each of them can look beautiful, however they differ a lot in cost, performance and maintenance.
Before choosing a floor, check the moisture level of the concrete. A simple test for example taping a plastic sheet onto the slab for a day or two will indicate any moisture problem. Address any leaks before you install new flooring.
The cold season in Canada are picturesque, but it is rough on your floors. Snow, road salt, gravel and dry indoor air can wear out your floors if left unchecked. With the right routine, you can protect your floors in top shape all season long.
In the end, which floor makes sense? When long-term value plus refinishing potential are what you want, choose engineered or solid hardwood. When budget, scratch resistance and easy maintenance come first, quality laminate is a smart choice.
Vinyl plank and vinyl tile have become the most popular choice for kitchens and bathrooms. Water-resistant cores guarantee that splashes cannot harm the floor as long as you clean them up. LVP feels more comfortable underfoot compared to stone, something much appreciated during winter.
