I have made the 3 hour taxi from Denpasar to Amed Bali 6 times this year. And who-knows how many more over the last 5. Here are my top tips for those who havent done it in a while, or first timers.

Get WhatsApp

All the locals use it, expats, and bali communities. It will mean you can contact local business, make friends and message with the internet (some simcard packages don’t include texting, so WhatssApp is useful for this)

Taxi to Amed from the Airport – 600k, 3 hours

I use Dana, he gives good rates (600k) and is friendly / trust worthy: WhatsApp: +62 838-3881-6642

Dana lives in Amed, so be sure to book him ahead of time.

Taxi from airport should be about 600k and take 2.5-3 hours.

The airport will taxi drivers will try to charge you 1M-1.2M, double what it should be. They will show you the price on Grab App to justify this, which is also over priced.

It is possible to get a local contact who will do a 400k lift, but after petrol the driver isn’t making much for 3-6 hours of their life.

The ride has a lot of turns, so if you need to, be prepared for carsickness.

Sim Card – Telkomcel

I have found Telkmocel to be most reliable service in Amed.

Simcards: Telkomcel, ~10 up / 5 down

Buy a sim-card with minimum data and top-up on the app. Its way more economical if youre staying a month or longer.

If you’re staying for a while, it might be worth buying a helmet in Denpasar.

If you ended up in Amed without a simcard, you can buy one here.

Need Cash?

There are no ATM Fees at some ATMs in Amed (depending on your bank) so I like to wait until I am there to get cash. But if you arrive late at night, 3 of the ATM’s will be closed. You can buy your Visa On Arrival with Card now, so there isn’t really any need for cash up front at the airport.

If youre getting more than 2.5m, Get cash out at the airpot can be easier then Amed. But I’ve found Amed doesnt charge me ATM fees, where there can be fees of 75k in the Airport.

The blue machine before immigration has a withdrawal fee of 75k (Amed is 50k). I got out 2.5m, but not sure the upper limit.

Bali Dive Shop

You pass Bali Dive Shop on the way. Its the best place in Bali to get dive gear. (If you know anyone in Amed, maybe ask them if they need you to pick something up)
